THE Court Martial convenes today (Tuesday) to charge suspected attackers in the recent tribal clashes that claimed close to 100 lives.

A total of 131 suspects appear on the charge sheet.  The Court Martial is to be chaired by Levy Karuhanga.

Security has been tightened at the Bundibugyo district headquarters.

Ethnic tensions in the Rwenzori region sparked off the deadly clashes which have claimed over 100 lives including civilians, soldiers and police officers.

The deadly clashes are linked to longstanding tribal differences between Bakonzo, as well as minority ethnic groups of the Bamba, Basongora and Banyabindi.

President Yoweri Museveni in a statement linked the killings to loyalists of the Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu of the Bakonzo, although the Rwenzururu kingdom distances itself from the attackers.

The 2nd deputy Prime Minister of Rwenzururu Kingdom was arrested by security operatives in Bundibugyo district in connection with the attacks and later released.

Monarchs in the region including king of Busongora, Ivan Rwigi IV Bwebale Rutakirwa Kabuumba, and Charles Wesley Mumbere the Rwenzururu king have condemned the attacks.
