Members of ‘Busoga Yaiffe’ a non-governmental organization have petitioned Parliament to intervene in the appalling state of Bugiri referral hospital.

The NGO vice chairperson, Hellen Namutamba who lead a team to Parliment said, “Bugiri hospital constructed in 1969 has never been rehabilitated. The medical   theater is ill equipment, mortuary lacks refrigeration facilities, water plumbing system is in shambles.  Buildings are in state of despair which have been turned into a bleeding center for bats and other vermin.”

Hadija Namubiru one of the petitioners said that the hospital lacks piped water. "It is terrible in the labour ward where some expectant mothers don’t have care takers to bring them water.”

The hospital was designed to serve less than 50,000 people of Bugiri district, but the population demanding health services has increased to over 100,000.

“We members of Busoga Yaiffe demand that Parliament prevails up on the health ministry to immediately rehabilitate the existing structures and construct new buildings to match the rise in demand” said the petition.

We also demand that the hospital be provided immediately with drugs, specialised medical doctors, modern medical equipment for the medical theater, outpatient wards, and increase the funding to carter for daily running of hospital,” the petition stated."

The Kinkizi East MP, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi who represented the Speaker said he will deliver the petition to a Parliament committee on health.
