THE national identity card registration process is in high gear as over eight million people have so far registered for the cards that will be needed to access any public service.

The deadline of the massive enrollment exercise is August 11.

Hajji Abdul Nsubuga, the National ID Project head of secretariat, told New Vision on Saturday that over eight million people have already registered for the national IDs.

But he didn’t break-down the details regarding the performance of the different regions.

“We are on schedule. Our target is to register 18 million people. Those who will not have registered by August 11, will have to register at their sub-counties,” Nsubuga said.

Last week, according to Pamela Ankunda, the internal affairs ministry communications officer, the number of persons who had registered for the national ID stood at six million, meaning over two million people registered for the ID in the past week alone.

“Paper comes in every Wednesday,” Ankunda said. “So we are able to tally and know the numbers who have registered.”

Government is hoping to register 18 million Ugandans above 16 years by February 27, 2015, a move that will enable the IDs to be used in the 2016 general elections.
