Two people died on spot and 10 others were seriously injured Friday morning when a truck carrying over 40 people failed to climb a hill and rolled back, tipping over in the process.

The accident happened near Kiruruma Primary School, 3km from Kihiihi town council in Kanungu district as a truck, registration number UAQ 721H, loaded with merchandise and passengers seated on top was heading for Nyamirama weekly market.

The officer in charge of traffic Kanungu district, Benon Kiconco, identified the dead as Fred Matama, 30, who hailed from Karubeizi parish village and Ahabwe Kandida, 40, who hailed from Rushoroza parish all in Kanungu district.

The injured that were rushed to Kihiihi Health Center IV were identified as Mubangizi Christine, Ahimbisibwe Naome, Muhumuza Richard, Byabasheija Bosco, Nzamukunda Josephine, Kyatuheire Phaebe, Nakyanzi Ruth, Bahati Patience, Karyaija Frank, Vastine Daughter and Kamahanga Ivan.

The group belonged to Kihiihi mobile traders association who traverse the district daily from one market to another selling their merchandise.

The traffic officer who visited the scene minutes after the accident blamed the accident on overloading and poor mechanical condition of the truck.

A survivor, Tushemereirwe Christine, said that the driver failed to engage the gears when ascending Kiruruma hill and the vehicle rolled back while luggage fell off and landed on passengers who had fallen off the truck.
