About 100 Kyambogo University students could face dismissal for being irregularly admitted into the institution.

At a media briefing, Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor Prof Eli Katunguka said the admissions of these students were not regularized by the university senate and most of them reportedly lack student numbers. Senate is the supreme academic body.

It is alleged that some of the students would bribe some university officials to gain admission into the university, while others would just walk into the lecture theatre and start attending tutorials.

“Some parents bought places for their children but these students are not recognized by the system,” Katunguka said recently.

As much as most of the students admitted irregularly have been fished-out by an ongoing probe by the university, some were found when they attempted to regularize their admission by seeking student numbers.

“You find someone in his final year but he does not have a student number. How do you get into the university if you don’t have a student number?” asked Katunguka. “Students who were admitted illegally will be sent away even if they are in their final year.”

Recently, Kyambogo discontinued six engineering students who were not admitted by senate but “smuggled” onto the admission list by some unscrupulous university officials.

A committee established to investigate irregularities in students’ admissions at Kyambogo recently recommended that nine staff implicated in the scam be reprimanded.

The staff, according to the report formed a mafia–like ring that is behind irregular admissions. The committee established the existence of a network of fraudsters responsible for irregular admissions and registration of students at Kyambogo.

Katunguka however said he would not divulge more details of the report to the press because it was yet to be discussed by the university council.
