Police have arrested a city trader over an acid attack on his wife that left her scarred.

The suspect Guard Tulyazeyo, a resident of Magulu zone in Kawempe owns a chain of People’s Supermarkets in and around the city including Mpereerwe and Kyebando.

Tulyazeyo was arrested Tuesday at Kampala central police station where he had been summoned for questioning over the acid attack on Peace Birungi.

Birungi, who separated with the businessman was attacked at her home just after she had left the supermarket she runs in Mpereerwe.

Birungi in currently hospitalized at Case Clinic in critical condition.

A friend of her residents refer to as Maama Frank said her assailants poured acid on Birungi at the end of last month just after she has returned from work at night.

She said Birungi made a deafening alarm that attracted residents who rushed her to Mpereerwe Medical Centre from where she was referred to Mulago hospital, and then to Case Clinic.

Tulyazeyo’s alibi however is that he was in Rukungiri on June 27 when he was called and informed that Birungi had been attacked with acid. He said by the time he arrived she was already hospitalized.

Tulyazeyo says that the cause of the attack could be the misunderstanding he has over a plot of land he bought from Joseph Ssebugenyi in Mpereerwe whose children are contesting it.

He says they have been arguing over the land for two years now. The plot of land houses a recreational centre called Heritage.

Ssebugenyi’s children have however distanced themselves from his accusations.

Residents who spoke on condition of anonymity however says that Tulyazeyo has for long had misunderstandings with his wife who accused him of philandering with female staff at the various supermarkets.

They claim the couple was living in separate houses though in the same premises.

Residents says the couple lived separate lives and Tulyazeyo would never let Birungi use his cars though they were in abundance. This relegated Birungi to using public transport.

Following the separation Birungi started her own supermarket, People’s supermarket in Mpereerwe, just opposite Tulyazeyo’s.

Residents claim this brewed busniess rivalry as most customers opted for Birungi’s supermarket.
