Parliament pigs to be sold today

POLICE will today auction the two ‘parliament pigs’ to the members of the public.

The two pigs which are currently being kept at police’s special investigations unit (SIU) in Kireka, were last week transferred from parliament’s Bauman House where they were being kept after Muslim MPs complained that the pigs were inconveniencing them.

However, Police deputy spokesperson, Polly Namaye on Sunday told New Vision Online that police would dispose of the pigs saying they had already got evidence.

“The pigs will be sold off tomorrow (Monday) so we are call upon all those interested in buying them to come and buy,” said Namaye.

Namaye however did not disclose how much each pig would cost saying police had not yet established the amount of money the pigs are worth.

Police sources last week told New Vision Online that the pigs had become a labiality to police and that the feeding costs had started to go up with police spending about Sh 30,000 per day feeding the abandoned animals.

The pigs were smuggled into the precincts of parliament two weeks back by two youth demonstrators who have since been charged and remanded to Luzira Prison.

Painted yellow the colour, the pigs had tags pinned against their ears with slogans condemning corruption, youth unemployment and poverty.

Deputy Police spokesperson Polly Namaye says gathering of evidence has been concluded.

Meanwhile, Namaye told New Vision Online that Police had transferred from parliament six of its officers who were recently arrested as a result of the incident involving the animals.

According to Namaye, the six officers who were manning the parliament’s southern wing gate where the pigs were smuggled into parliament had been transferred to SIU in Kireka.

“We transferred them and have since replaced them with new ones to balance the number of police officers with the number of visitors that access parliament,” said Namaye.

Parliament’s police station was in 2012 upgraded into a directorate with a commandant and over 100 police officers deployed.
