The Irish ambassador to Uganda Donal Cronin, has hailed Uganda’s refugee policy, describing it as unmatched and the most friendly in the world.

Cronin made the remarks at Kati Kati Restaurant, while addressing the Uganda Irish Alumni Association.  The association was holding its first annual general meeting.

“Uganda has the best refugee policy in the whole world. This is a country of friendly people,” Cronin stated.

The term ‘refugee’ is a description of a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

Uganda plays host to thousands of refugees, as a result of cross-border conflict, most especially from the neighbouring countries, specifically the Democratic Republic of Congo. Other refugees hail from Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Rwanda, Somalia and South Sudan.

Cronin noted that Uganda and Ireland  share a common history of conflict, and resilience, among others, saying the two countries have been able to put aside their past misfortunes and march forward.

He commended the association, saying it is a testament of Uganda’s close ties with  Ireland.

Active refugee settlements in the country are Kyaka II in Kyenjojo district, Nakivale in Isingiro district, Oruchinga near Mbarara town, Kyangwali in Hoima district, Kiryandongo in Masindi district, Paralonya, and Rhino Camp in Arua district.

Others are Imvepi, Madi Okollo and the integrated camps of Adjumani.

Uganda’s Refugee Act, 2006, prescribes the treatment, entitlements under International Conventions, rights, and obligations of refugees on Ugandan soil.
