City Hall court Grade one magistrate, Moses Mushebebe, has convicted and sentenced 13 hawkers to one month imprisonment in Luzira prison for selling foodstuffs and other merchandise on Kampala Street.
Mushebebe also sentence a 19-year-old Ivan Ssemakula to a caution but ordered his merchandise to be destroyed.
Two suspects who include taxi driver Abdul Sibimana and Brenda Birungi were sentenced to a fine of sh600, 000 and sh80, 000 respectively.
The suspects who include Abdul Sibimana, Brenda Birungi, Juma Akugizibwe, Vicent Mbinina, Peterson Mpora, Clovince Bwesigye, Vicent Mbale, Wilson Zosenga, Ivan Ssemakula, Francis Mwesigye, and Agan Nyagumanawe were convicted after they pleaded guilty to the crime.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) early this month announced plans to prosecute both street vendors and buyers who abet hawking and as a result 25 were convicted and sentenced to community service for a period of 10 days.
The directive came after repeated calls by the authority for vendors quit the streets of Kampala.
KCCA has over the last three years attempted to evict vendors.
