Uganda’s High Commission in India is taking part in investigations into the alleged kidnap and rape of a 30-year-old Ugandan by two men in India.

The incident happened in south-west Delhi's Dwarka area on June 20.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Fred Opolot confirmed in an interview with New Vision on Tuesday that officials at the High Commission in India were following up the case.

“An official from the High Commission was with the victim when she recorded a statement before a magistrate. We will provide all consular services for her to get justice,” Opolot said.

Opolot confirmed that the two suspects had been arrested and were awaiting trial.

According to the victim’s statement filed at Dwarka North Police Station, two Indian men in a car offered her a lift on her way home which she refused.

The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was returning to her rented flat in Dabri after meeting a friend at the Janakpuri District Centre in West Delhi.

One of the men reportedly pulled her inside the car and drove her to a house in Dwarka, where the two men took turns to rape her.

Later, the rapists allegedly dumped her at a secluded place and disappeared with her purse containing 3,000 rupees (sh127,000) and her mobile phone.

Opolot said the woman reported the case to Police the next day and recorded a statement before a magistrate, accompanied by an interpreter from Uganda’s High Commission.

A police team accompanied her to a government hospital where she was medically examined tests confirmed sexual assault.

A case of gang-rape under Section 376 (G) of Indian Penal Code and robbery were filed at Dwarka Police Station and are further investigating the matter, Indian press reported.

The victim reported that she was warned by the rapists not to her ordeal to Police. She also told police that she had a monetary dispute with the men saying they had refused to refund it.

In their statements, the suspects reportedly claimed that they owed the woman an undisclosed sum of money and were being framed.

Rape is one of the commonest crimes against women in India. Last month, cousins aged 14 and 16 were raped and hanged on a tree, sparking outrage in Uttar Pradesh state.
