The Judiciary spokesperson, Erias Kisawuzi, has explained why 29 newly recruited Grade one Magistrates have pitched camp at the National Leadership Institute at Kyankwanzi for training.

Dispelling fear among some opposition actors such as Abdu Katuntu, the shadow Attorney General that the Magistrates would be compromised by the training, Kisawuzi told New Vision over the weekend that it “was not the first time that judicial officers have gone to Kyankwanzi for trainings”.

Kisawuzi added that he has also attended a similar training, which the Public Service recommends for all public servants.

Kisawuzi said that the Magistrates were dispatched for the three-week training course by the Chief Registrar, Paul Gadenya for an induction course under the arrangement of the Public Service Commission.

“These are new Magistrates who have to undergo an induction course that all of us have attended at Kyankwanzi,” he said.

Kisawuzi said that “military science, political science, public service delivery and how the three organs of government (judiciary, parliament and the executive) operate” will be dispensed to the group during their stay at Kyankwanzi.

Gadenya said that the Magistrates need to understand how government systems run, what government standing orders mean and how to provide services the citizens.

Recently, retired Supreme Court judge, Prof. George Kanyeihamba called for “a radical surgery” of the judiciary to stop the public from completely losing confidence in the country’s judicial system.

He cited corruption as one of the major setbacks that is eating away the integrity of the judiciary. It is expected that during the Kyankwanzi retreat, Magistrates would tackled the issue of corruption among other setbacks that hinder the delivery of justice in Ugandan courts.
