KAMPALA - Leaders of Pentecostal churches held joint thanksgiving prayers at Nakivubo Stadium on Saturday for Pastor Umar Mulinde, a victim of a horrific acid attack three years ago.

The group of church heads was led by Dr. Joseph Serwadda, who is the Presiding Apostle of Born-Again Faith in Uganda.

Pastor Mulinde was on December 12, 2011 waylaid by assailants at his church in Namasuba just as he had parked his car after preaching to his faithful at Kikajjo.

One of the attackers poured acid in his face, and fled, leaving the pastor screaming for help. The next time he regained consciousness, he was lying on a hospital bed in excruciating pain, severely disfigured.

Three days after the incident, police arrested one suspect.

During the Saturday prayers, the group, which included Pastor Simeon Kayiwa and his wife, who are the founders of Kayiwa University and Namirembe Christian Fellowship Church, called on government to deliver justice in the matter.

They also prayed that God kills anyone who dares again harm Pastor Mulinde, who flew to Israel for treatment and rehabilitation and only came back to Uganda recently.

Also in attendance for the joint prayers were Apostle John Bunjo (regional overseer of National fellowship of Born Again Pentecostal Churches), Bishop Grivas Musisi (Overseer Prayer Palace Churches), Dr. Abed Bwanika, Apostle Charles Tumwine and others.

The leaders asked God to protect their colleague of Gospel Life Church International at Namasuba.

When he was attacked back then, Pastor Mulinde’s face, neck and arms were covered with deep black scars and his lips swelled.

He stayed in Israel where he received thorough treatment, including plastic surgery on his face and returned home much changed and improved.

The victim said he forgave all those behind the attack and called upon government to control the transportation and transaction of acid as is the case with use of guns.

Pastor Mulinde also cautioned youth to be very vigilant, warning that close allies can end up being dangerous.

However, he said he was not happy with the way police handled his case since no one has been brought to book and also that he has not been updated on the probe.
