At least two passengers died instantly in a bus accident along Kampala-Masaka highway on Friday morning.
The dead included Hillary Atwire (24 ) and Adrin Tuhahirwa (68) both of Kanungu while one unidentified passenger had one of his legs cut off and several others seriously injured in this accident .
The accident involving a bus, Savana Coaches registration UAB 727S coming from Kanungu to Kampala with another truck not yet established occurred at Nabyewangwa near Masaka.
Gamal Addu Kadri, regional traffic police commander Katonga said the exact cause of the accident is not yet established as they are still looking for another vehicle with which this bus collided.
He said the victims were rushed to Mulago hospital and the bus towed to Buwama police station.
Hamidu Njerero, the turn boy for this bus said the driver of the truck which caused the accident did not stop as it was not much affected.
The traffic police had last year recorded a reduction in bus accidents due to tight measures restricting drivers to over speed and making return journeys.
However Dr. Stephen Kasiima, director traffic and road safety said there are cases where bus operators employ incompetent drivers and those previously sacked from one bus company due to indiscipline.
The Transport Licensing Board (TLB) recorded 1005 bus accidents from 1st December, 2010 to June 2013 of which 200 people lost their lives while several others sustained injuries.
Winstone Katushabe, Secretary Transport Licensing Board (TLB) said the introduction of Public Service Vehicle (SPV) driver badges will greatly solve the problem of incompetent drivers on the road as they are the lead cause of accidents.
