State Minister for Water Betty Bigombe Atuku says she is still a minister and that she has not resigned as recently reported.

“I am still a minister and I am travelling to Sudan for the Nile Basin Initiative summit to represent Government in that capacity,” she said in a telephone interview.

However, she declined to comment on the World Bank appointment as senior director for Fragility, Conflict and Violence, which takes effect on July 1.

The Ministers of Water from NBI member states—Uganda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya Rwanda, Tanzania and Eritrea—are meeting in Sudan today to review the progress of the Nile Basin Initiative, plan and also consider the budget that will fund the imitative in the next financial year.

The Nile Technical Advisory Committee, representatives from the developed world and civil society organizations are also expected to attend the one-day summit.

At the summit, the South Sudanese Minister for Electricity, Water and Irrigation Jemma Nunu Kumba would also handover the chairmanship of the NBI to the Minister of Water from Sudan. The chairmanship of the NBI rotates among member states’ water ministers every year.

The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is an Inter-Governmental organization established with the objective of organizing sustainable management and development of the Nile waters.

The NBI member states aim at achieving sustainable economic development through the equitable utilization of the Nile Basin water resources.
