FORMER Uganda Rugby Union (URU) chairman William Blick has caution the current executive against trimming the national league from 8 clubs to the premiership six which is currently in the pipeline.

Blick also the UOC president, told New Vision Sport that trimming the league would mean reducing on the players’ pool base for the national team and most importantly the bargaining power for sponsorship that funds activities.

“You have to expand the league to be able get a wider player catchment base and that is how players like Andrew Olwenyi and Adrian Wasswa of Mongers were identified. Trimming the league would be the worst move for Uganda Rugby,” Blick stated.

Blick further explains that expanding the league could give sponsors confidence to invest their money in the sport because they are assured of long term mileage.

“We all aware of the low quality of players but you need to have many exposed to the available quality rugby for a period of time and that was our plan before we left office and thought that the current executive will continue with it instead of trimming the teams,” Blick stressed.

Blick also called for the restructuring of both the technical committee and the national team coaching bench.

The technical committee has Irene Namapii, Paul Nyangabyaki, Oscar Olaro, David Bukenya, Yayiro Kasasa, Louis Lwanga, Dorothy Nekesa, Roger Ssebina and Jacko Chagga while the technical bench has Peter Magona, Fred Mudoola and Herbert Wafula.
