The first child rights convention is going on in Kampala. The Uganda Child Rights NGO Network (UCRNN) together with its members have organized a convention that seeks to bring together multiple actors in the child rights sector to deliberate on key issues affecting children in the country.

Speaking on the second day of the convention, whose theme is increasing investment in accountability for children’s welfare, UCRNN executive director, Stella Ayo-Odongo called upon the various participating NGOs to live the passion for children.

“We need to serve children with passion. Of course, many of you here will say you have the passion to serve children, but it is difficult to assess passion and I am sure if we are subjected to a dare situation in service of the children, the passion will disappear,” she says.

Arthur Larok of Actionaid, one of the child-focused organisations in Uganda, said over the years NGOs in the country have suffered various inhibitions for instance, deliberate de-legitimization and isolation of leadership structures deemed anti-government.

“Lack of knowledge of NGO legislation by most NGO leaders and deliberate interference from state actors with the purpose of causing diversion from our objectives are the other problems affecting our work,” he said.

The convention, which started at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala on June 10 and will end on June 13, will involve a series of activities such as an inter-ministerial dialogue, roundtable discussions with the development Partners and Private sector dialogue.

The civil society organization dialogue and a policy dialogue, involving all stakeholders in the child rights sector are the other activities to be handled.
