Motion to Censure EALA Speaker Zziwa collapses

The motion seeking to censure East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Speaker, Margaret Nantongo Zziwa, collapsed on Wednesday after it was ruled that the motion was no longer valid.

In her ruling at the regional parliament headquarters in Arusha Tanzania, Zziwa noted that the East African court of justice had declined to take a decision restraining the assembly from going ahead with the motion for her removal. She ruled that  the matter be resolved by the House using the available rules of procedure.

She also noted that three members from Tanzania had withdrawn their signatures that had originally been appended to support the motion.

“In these instances, I find that the motion falls short of the requisite four signatures from all the partners’ states as a mandatory requirement. And also suffers expiry within the meaning of rule 9 as its tabling was not crystalized within the requisite 7 days,” ruled Zziwa before adjourning the House.
