MPs on the budget committee have recommended that Government ensures realistic funding for the 2016 general elections and avails sh75b for the Electoral Commission (EC) to adequately prepare for the forthcoming polls.

This is contained in their report on next year’s budget that is yet to be presented to the House for consideration.

The MPs said that EC had indicated to them that while it had received sh105.61b to prepare for the elections, the election body has funding gap of sh75b.

“This shortfall will affect the readiness of the Commission to conduct the general elections in 2016 if this money is not availed,” Ekanya Geoffrey said.

The committee also wants government to provide an additional sh57b to enable EC implement its new salary structure.

“The salary structure for EC was set up in 1999. Since then, there has been no increase yet the inflation rate continues to rise. The committee notes with concern that EC despite the important role it plays has not received an enhancement of emoluments of their staff yet other institutions within and outside the sector have had their salaries reviewed,” Ekanya noted.
