The National Water and Sewerage Cooperation (NWSC) has launched a $25m project to increase the volume of water supply in Arua.

The project which is to be funded by World Bank will include the construction of a sewer line and lagoons at four locations to cater for the waste generated in greater Arua town.

Speaking at the launch of the project last week, the corporation’s chief manager, in charge of  planning and capital development, Johnson Amayo , said the project is expected to expand the water supply volume from 2 million litres to 12 million.

He said the project is aimed at addressing water needs of people and sanitation of greater Arua. He stressed that of all municipalities in the country it is only Arua without a piped sewage system and lagoons.

Amayo said they have identified three drainage lines to River Enyau, Oswu and Asa. He said the project will be a very good help to the community because drainage waste water without treatment will negatively affect the community.

The mayor/LCV Charles Asiki said the municipality has been faced with the problem of waste management and water shortage due to the growing population in the area. Currently the cooperation supplies water to 4,000 homesteads. The new project targets to increase supply up to 15,000 homesteads.
