KIBAALE - Police are holding a 21-year-old man who confessed to killing and secretly burying his elder brother.
John-Mary Baka gave himself in to police at Kakumiro Police Station on Monday.
Preliminary police investigations reveal that Baka brutally murdered his brother, identified as Edward Bossa, who was in his mid 30s, on Saturday at around 12pm local time.
The accused is a resident of Kachululu village in Bwanswa sub-county. His murdered brother was a produce dealer in the same village.
Their father, Josephat Sekiwere, told reporters that his sons were embroiled in a money wrangle.
He said the two fought over sh270, 000 which the deceased was demanding from the suspect, which is likely to have resulted into the fatal end of one of them.
So far, police investigations show that Baka picked his brother from the site where he was distilling alcohol and later hacked him several times to death before burying his mutilated body in a banana plantation.
He then concealed the burial site using a plant.
Referring to the suspect, the criminal investigations officer of Kibaale district Ben Mugisha said: "This man has confessed to having killed and buried his brother and planted a banana sucker on the grave to hide evidence.”
Rose Mary Namayanja, the village chairperson, said the suspect is the one who led police and other residents to a secret grave on Monday afternoon, two days after committing the crime.
Namayanja said that the deceased had gone missing since Saturday afternoon. She decried the increasing cases of brutal murders in the area.
"This is the third person to be murdered brutally in a space of less than three months," she said.
The police said that the suspect is currently being held at Kakumiro Police Station pending transfer to Kibaale police head quarters.
A report from the postmortem examination indicated that the deceased succumbed to excessive bleeding which resulted from cuts inflicted on him and that his brain was also affected.
The confessed killer will be charged with murder as soon as investigations are complete.
