Men and women weightlifters on the Uganda national team are in the running for the first athletes to be recognised by local sports scribes as their monthly Nile Special USPA assembly convenes at the upscale Imperial Royal Hotel for the first time Monday.

USPA and Imperial Royale Hotel are expected to announce a partnership that will see the journalists hold all their monthly activities, including the monthly awards dinner, at the hotel.

“It is an achievement for the association. But it comes with a demand for us to keep up there. I call on every member and those still out there to join us and make Uganda Sports Press association even stronger,” USPA president Mark Namanya said.

Lined up for the monthly award are the weightlifters for their achievement at the World Islamic Championships in Kampala. Golfers, who represented Uganda at the Africa Zone VI Championship in South Africa are also shortlisted.

The list also has young swimmers, who spurred the country to a sixth place finish at the CANA Zone 3&4 Championships as well as riders, who won the FIM Africa Central Africa Motocross Championship at Busiika.
