KCCA now have a historic double in sight after edging Victoria University to the Uganda Cup final.

The Lugogo side held Sports Club Victoria University to a goal-less draw yesterday to qualify 2-1 on aggregate.

But KCCA, who at 14 have now equalled Express at most Uganda Cup finals reached, should count themselves lucky for leaving Namboole victorious.

The hosts on several occasions had KCCA’s backline on their knees only to waste chances. Yaser Mugerwa was the first to have the home team gasping in shock when his first half effort ended on the woodwork.

Matters were not helped with the resultant rebound being fired over the bar by Mathew Odong.

Noah Semakula could have got that badly needed winner in the second half. But he also couldn’t find the mark with his diving header moments before team-mate Savio Kabugo fired over.

The poor marksmanship had a lot to do with the absence of strikers Simon Okwi, Ceaser Sapeo and Dan Nsubuga. The trio was out on injury.

KCCA were on the other hand not very adventurous. Save for Steven Bengo, who on a number of occasions committed defenders, the FUFA Super League champions were more defensive.

Coach Morley Byekwaso’s disappointment was very evident after the game.

“Sometimes football is very unfair. We did everything. We should have won by at least four goals.”

KCCA coach George Nsimbe’s cautious approach had a lot to do with the team’s injuries. Club lead striker Tony Odur had to be helped off after only ten minutes limping. His partner William Wadri also followed just moments later.

Also missing because of injury was last season’s league top scorer Herman Wasswa.

Nsimbe attributed his trioops’ advance to the final to teamwork.

“We played like a unit. We also made good use of our chances unlike Victoria University,” a beaming Nsimbe said as KCCA celebrated.

Out of six encounters between these two sides, there has only been one clear win. Five have ended in draws, one of which, a champion of champions contest, proceeded to penalty shoot-outs that KCCA won 5-3.

KCCA who won the league last week are now eyeing their ninth trophy in the knock-out competition.
