KAWEMPE Muslim SS proved their might in the National Ball Games girls’ football category by retaining their crown after overcoming surprise package Citizen High School Kaberebere 1-0 in the final played on Sunday at Lango College Lira.

A late Viola Namuddu shot bounced in front of Citizen goalie Janat Namukasa and into the net to separate the two sides as the game looked destined for a 0-0 draw.

The Isingiro district champions Citizen High School, had been at the tournament for the second time, and became the first team from Ankole region to reach the final.

It’s the reason nobody knew about them, with their record of eliminating fancied Masaka SS in the second round of last year’s edition in Mbarara standing a little shorter than that of Kawempe and Kitende.

However, the Ankole region representatives kept attracting many supporters in Lira with their composed game as the tournament progressed.

And when they eliminated 2012 champions St Mary’s Kitende in a 5-4 penalty shootout after their semifinal ended 0-0 in normal time, their support grew even bigger but they couldn’t stop Kawempe from winning the title; their second in a row.

“We are pleased to have reached the final and it could have gone either way. We were playing a good team but we put up a good show. We want now to go back and prepare for the regional games,” said Citizen playmaker Ritah Nabbosa.

In basketball, Kibuli SS retained the boys title after beating rivals Buddo SS 71-47 in a one sided game while Kitende beat record girls champions Nabisunsa 55-45 to also retain the girls crown.

In Rugby, Hana Mixed beat debutants Kololo High 6-3 to reclaim their supremacy while in Hockey, another surprise package Ntare School beat Kololo High 2-1 on penalties to win their first ever championship.

A total of 48 teams that reached in the semifinals and finals of all the disciplines, of Rugby, Basketball, Girls football, Hockey and Table Tennis, qualified to represent Uganda at the upcoming East Africa Games due on August 22-Septemer 1 in Dar es Salaam.
