FORMER national basketball player Wilson Wanyama has passed away but his family are not going to mourn his inspiring life.

“We are going to celebrate his life,” said the daughter of the deceased Elenor Chemonges, one of his two children.

“Because 40 years ago, doctors told him he has one year to live when he broke his spine.” Wanyama’s life was in its youthful prime in 1974 with all his life ahead of him.

A student at Makerere, Wanyama was playing for both the national basketball and swimming teams when his life took a sudden, sad turn.

“He fell off the Makerere University sickbay and broke his spinal cord,” narrates Elenor.

“The doctors told him he would soon die but he said he would live a full life and he did so for 40 years.”

Wanyama’s accident did not kill him but permanently constrained him to a wheel chair.

But Wanyama’s physical disability did not shackle his spirit as he went to complete his studies, worked for the ministry of finance until his retirement in 2010 and did pastoral work for the deliverance church in Kiira.
