CHESS: Wanyama takes on Kawuma in title hunt

Ex-Olympiads Patrick Kawuma and arch rival Harold Wanyama are the pair to watch as the quest for the for the vacant title at the national chess championship Friday at the Tyres head offices in Kamwokya a Kampala suburb.

Ex-Olympiads Patrick Kawuma and arch rival Harold Wanyama are the pair to watch as the quest for the for the vacant title at the national chess championship Friday at the Tyres head offices in Kamwokya a Kampala suburb.

The pair Kawuma rated 2255 and slightly low rated Wanyama (2217) will be battling out in the third round this morning at the event that doubles as the final phase of the Olympiad qualifiers.

The two are among the 12 contestants in the final quest battling for the vacant title after champion IM Elijah Emojong was locked out of the local contest basing on the FIDE rules governing International master title holders.

Wanyama will later face Raphael Buti (2121) as his rival Kawuma encounters another stronger opponent and former champion Arthur Ssegwanyi rated 2281 in the fourth round at the same venue.

The 11 rounds contest will also see Raphael Buti start the day’s action with a game against Martha Ssonko on board one as Arthur Ssegwanyi faces Haruna Nsubuga on board three.
