Officials from the Law Development Centre (LDC) have asked for sh5b to construct a four storeyed building to accommodate 10 firm rooms, library and computer lab and offices.

Appearing before  the parliamentary committee on legal and parliamentary affairs on Tuesday, the officials noted that LDC intends to continue with the two streams for the Bar Course and take on all students who will have passed the pre-entry examination.

“There is therefore need to expand the infrastructure.  LDC has also two plots of land on Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road, which are occupied by squatters. The High Court ruled in our favour, but the squatters are to be compensated a sum of sh790m,” the deputy director Florence Dollo told the committee chaired by the West Budama MP, Fox Odoi.

She said they anticipate that the number of students is going to increase in financial year 2014/15, which will lead to increase in student direct expenses like allowances for part time lectures as more will have to be appointed, stationery, teaching aids and infrastructure will also attract expenditures.

Dollo also noted that out of the total amount of sh2.2b required for completion of an Auditorium, sh1.1b has been provided, leaving a funding gap of sh1b.

However, the MPs expressed concern about the failure by the management to conduct research in two topical legal issues due to lack of funding
