Embattled Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, has expressed shock at the recent leaked recordings of his deputy Suleiman Kidandala meeting the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura.

Speaking from his home in Wakaligga a Kampala suburb, Lukwago said he was taken aback by the recordings and he has summoned Kidandala to explain himself on the matter.

A leaked tape recording indicted that the Deputy Lord Mayor, Suleiman Kidandala, had met the Police Chief Kale Kayihura to discuss the fate of the mayor at City hall.

In the five minute recording, a voice sounding alike to that of Kidandala, is heard discussing the Lord Mayor Lukwago’s relationship with opposition stalwart Dr. Kiiza Besigye. Kidandala goes on to tell the IGP that Lukwago was suffering from ‘arrivism’ and this bore clashes between him and the KCCA executive director, Jennifer Musisi.

Kidandala also told the IGP that he had suggested to the Lord Mayor that they oust Besigye from their city campaigns to avoid state attention.

Kidandala has since owned up to the recording.“I didn’t inform my boss about the meeting and I don’t regret the spirit in which I did what I did. I am more than convinced that I did it for the good of Kampala city and my boss,” he said.

Lukwago expressed shock that his deputy had secretly met with Kayihura and did not inform him about it. He also challenged the IGP to explain why he was holding secret meetings with his deputy without his information.

“We have had meetings with the government before that have not yielded fruit, why are they now calling and secretly meeting with my deputy, I need a clear explanation on this,” Lukwago questioned.

Lukwago was in the company of fellow opposition politicians: Rubaga North MP Moses Kasibante and Kawempe North MP Latif Ssebaggala.

Police Chief Kale Kayihura has not commented about the matter. When the New Vision called him, he did pick the call.
