On April 13, millions of Christians thronged churches world over with palm leaves to commemorate the triumphant re-entry of Jesus Christ into the holy city of Jerusalem.

This Passion Sunday is celebrated in commencement with the Holy week in which Christ was arrested on Holy Thursday, crucified on Good Friday and resurrected on Easter Sunday.

The Resurrection of Christ is the back-borne of Christianity.  In his homily at St. Peter’s square in the Vatican, Pope Francis asked; “Has my life fallen asleep? Am I like Pontius Pilate, who, when he sees the situation difficult washes my hands? Where is my heart?” The Holy Father pondered following the Palm Sunday mass’s Gospel in which Jesus’ disciples slept while He prayed after the betrayal by his own Judas Iscariot.

In Uganda, like the rest of the Christian world, we have observed this Lenten period with the moral and religious values attributed to it both individually and communally.

And very soon the Government, State and religious leaders will be imparting the press with their respective Easter Communiqués. But how have we lived through-out this festive season?

The religious leaders have continued to be in close links with those society perceives immorally unfit, not to win their hearts to the suffering Christ of this week nor to listen to their confessions but to receive huge packages from them. Remember, Judas Iscariot was given 30 pieces of silver.

At the beginning of this April, in his message during the 10th anniversary of Makerere University of Business School’s Chapel, Archbishop Michael Blume, the Nuncio said that the current setting of the economy only benefits a clique of individuals. Religious leaders are masters on the Gospel. However, even the devil knows it fully, the reason it was able to tempt Jesus while quoting the scriptures. The preachers will say “do as I say but not as I do”. How about leading by example? After this lent, it is my hope and prayer that the men and women in cassocks stopped being an embarrassment of their sheep by greedily welcoming political handouts. Otherwise, they will continue to be lambasted and belittled by politicians.

Today, the devil freely over manifests itself amongst the young people especially through overwhelming ambitions, greed, alcohol and drug abuse, reckless sex life styles, name it. With the word “cool” all over them, the Ugandan youths have almost lost the sight and direction of God.

Am aware of a girl who introduced four times, moreover, two men within one year in the swag of “ebintu ka tubirye”!!! A youth of today is the most vulnerable to manipulation because they are very desperate. But what happened to religious names.

Has this period of intensive fasting and prayer caused or awakened a meaningful lifestyle in majority of the youths. In other words, if the Almighty decided that the end of the world is today, which place in heaven shall most of the youths fight for, heaven or earth?
We are all children of God, because, we look like him as we were created in His image. God gave us His only begotten son for falling short of His glory. When Christ came among us in our own humanity, he never lost his divinity. That is why he rose from the dead.

If he had not risen, there would be no Christianity today that stemmed from His Father’s mission on earth. So, we all, who bear to have been named by the virtue of His teachings, we do not have to betray him again through our thoughts, words, and actions. Like the Rt. Rev. Stanley Ntagali, the Arch Bishop of Church of Uganda, appealed “Lets us build harmony and walk in the right direction and live for the right purpose. Imagine being careless with your life as a mother, father, uncle, teacher or priest.

Why destroy life with hatred, immorality, tribalism, murder, and defilement. Let us walk carefully as Jesus rode in Jerusalem and Uganda will be the best place to live in.”

A very blessed happy Easter to ye all.
