LOCAL football governing body FUFA has cleared Sports Club Victoria University (SCVU) to represent the country in the CECAFA Nile Basin Cup winners’ Cup.

The inaugural tournament is to be hosted by Sudan from May 20 to June 5.

CECAFA’s member Associations together with Democratic Republic of Congo and Egypt have also been offered the chance to nominate clubs to take part in the tournament.

Federations were asked to nominate teams that either won their domestic knockout cup tournaments or finished runners up in their respective national leagues.

“We contacted Victoria University and they confirmed participation as the deadline for registration was April 15. This is a good tournament that will help our teams and players gain exposure” remarked FUFA CEO Edgar Watson.

In a communication that was sent to FUFA, the CECAFA Secretary General welcomed the new idea.

“As a region, we need as many competitions as possible to strengthen our clubs and give them a competitive edge on the continental stage. Once this event takes off, we are of the opinion of launching CECAFA Champions League” said Nicholas Musonye.

CECAFA and Sudan will cater for all the costs of travel and accommodation for all teams.
