UGANDA Martyrs University (UMU) Nkozi registered their maiden win in 26 University Football League matches, after beating hosts MUST in the league game played on Sunday in Mbarara.

UMU had gone two UFL seasons without a win, and Mbarara was among the teams that had inflicted misery on the Nkozi based side, with a 4-1 win in last season’s first round meeting before both settled for a 2-all draw in the return leg.

However, it was coach Baker Mbowa’s troops that came to the game with all the determination to exact revenge on MUST and also hunt for their first win.

Their effort paid off when striker Peter Busingye rose between two MUST defenders to head home on 40 minutes for their opening goal to go into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

Substitute Omar Chana made it 2-0 in the 82nd minute before MUST reduced the deficit with Asuman Ashraf Kihogo rising highest to head home on 84 minutes.

MUST’s loss though was confirmed when Frank Asanya struck in similar fashion on 85 minutes to seal the win.

Mbowa looked a relieved man especially after having seen his side go down twice in their two opening games against UCU and defending champions KU and warned Makerere University, whom they play next on Thursday.

“We have been working extra hard especially after the two opening losses and our effort has paid off. We are now targeting three points against Makerere, and a win will keep us up for the next round,” Mbowa said.

His MUST counterpart Salim Twaha lamented the mistakes his defence made, but said they would be rectified before their game against defending champions KU on Saturday in Kampala.
