Luwero Woman MP Nabukenya loses seat

Democratic Party’s Brenda Nabukenya has lost her Luwero Woman MP seat.

The Court of Appeal on Thursday pronounced that she was not elected in accordance with electoral laws.  

The Court of Appeal has ordered a by-election upholding a decision of the High Court in Kampala.

Justice Vicent Zehurikize (now retired) on November 1, 2012 declared the seat vacant and ordered for fresh polls.

The Court of Appeal judgment effectively means that the Electoral Commission (EC) must organise fresh polls.

Grievances in election petitions do not go beyond the realm of the Appellate Court.

Subsequently after Zehurikize's judgment, Nabukenya petitioned the Appellate Court challenging her rival, NRM’s Rebecca Nalwanga.

The panel was comprised of Steven Kavuma, Remmy Kasule and Augustine Nshimye.

On the February 18, 2011 polls, Nalwanga polled 46,544 votes, Anna Kirabo and Elsie Namagembe polled 22,332 votes, and 14,663 votes respectively, while Lugudde (independent) was last with 4,741 votes.

However, in the by-election, Nabukenya won with 14,945 votes while Nalwanga polled 14,915 votes. Gwokyalya polled 3,775 votes, Asiimwe got 3,687 votes, and Namagambe polled 2,193, while Lugudde trailed with 191votes.
