KAMPALA - As the world marks the World Water Day, the Naguru community in Kampala has in turn received a water harvesting facility from Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL).
For two decades now, the World Water Day has been observed on 22 March – since 1993
Lillian Akot Okura, UBL’s corporate relations manager commissioned the facility at the Naguru police barracks on Friday.
She talked of the beverage company’s strong belief in “empowering local communities through sustainable access to safe drinking water and hygienic sanitary facilities”.
She also mentioned the importance of safe water and proper sanitation.
“Access to safe water and sanitation is a catalyst to better health of the community. It is our hope that this intervention will help address the challenges that this [Naguru] community face in terms of water shortage.”
Many parts of the country have been hit by water shortages due to the dry weather spell in the recent weeks.
But with a few days of rain recently, it is hoped that many parts will start to receive more rain.
At the Naguru commissioning, Okura pointed out that their investment is just one of the many water projects that UBL has implemented across the country.
The company has recently invested in water and sanitation programmes in Kampala, Jinja and Mbarara, which has altogether benefitted over one million people, she said.
The facilities, installed with technical support of Agency for Capacity Building (ACB), are part of a wider initiative to ensure sustainable development through provision of access to clean water.
The tanks which were handed over to the Naguru community are linked to a water harvesting facility and have a capacity of 20,000 litres each.
They will be managed by the Naguru community.
UBL has over the years played a significant role in providing access to clean, sustainable safe water through the EABL Foundation ‘Water of Life’ initiative.
