THE national amateur golf team that recently qualified to make the team have been tasked to win the Zone 6 championship and the Africa Junior Championship due in South Africa and Zambia.

To ensure the team is up to the task, the Kiryowa Kiwanuka led UGU has organized a detailed 3-week training regime for the team in Lugazi, Entebbe and at the Uganda Golf Clubs.

The twenty-man team will be joined by Joseph Mawejje, Phillip Kasozi, Henry Lujja and Gideon Kagyenzi in the training camp.

According to a work plan released by the executive, the 24 man team starts training with a one-week camp in Lugazi, March 24-30, with physical exercises and conditioning training.

Week two at the Uganda Golf Club will be for ball work and the actual qualification of the final ten-man team.

The qualification will involve 24 players grouped in four-balls of six groups with the group winners automatically qualifying.

Six runners up play each other in match play format with the top 3 winners also qualifying.

The last slot on the team will be up to the coach to decide.

Of the 9 players, if any junior players qualify, they will make it to the team for the Africa Junior championship due April 26.

If there are no juniors or if there is a gap for 1 or 2, a separate competition for juniors will be held to determined who fills these slots.

The coach will also select a reserve team of 5 players in accordance with the seeding for any standby purpose.

The top ten will then camp in Entebbe for five days before heading for the championship in Cape Town. In between team members will have two days off with their families before travel.

The training will involve going through early morning physio exercises, range work and training sessions with coaches. The team will also employ the services of a sports psychologist.

The zone six championship is set to tee off on April 14 with a singles round before the foursomes the following day and the Better ball contest thereafter.

Team Uganda will have two practice rounds in Cape Town before the championship.

South Africa with 13 championships is still the team to beat while Uganda’s highest ever position is 4th place.

Sh28m will be spent on the three-week training.
