VETERAN boxing tactician Dick Katende has bounced back as coach of the national team, the Bombers.

Katende gave a nod to the job after being appointed by the Uganda Boxing Federation executive following a meeting last Saturday.

The towering coach was previously in charge of the Bombers for over a decade until 2007 when he quit the cornerman’s stool during Roger Ddungu’s turbulent reign as boxing supremo.

Katende, who will be assisted by UPDF coach Oscar Binka, takes charge immediately with a 50-man squad that was named to prepare for the Commonwealth Games and the Africa Youth Championships.

“This is a big challenge. It takes a long time to groom good boxers, but all the same I am going to do my best,” remarked Katende, who until recently has been coach of East Coast Boxing Club.

During his reign the Bombers were a power in the FESCABA regional events. The national boxing squad also collected medals in Africa Zone V, All Africa Games and the Commonwealth Games.
