Makerere University guild presidential elections will be held today in a tightly contested race that has two female contenders and six male contestants.

Candidates in the race held their last campaign rallies in the different halls of residence and hostels Tuesday.

Lillian Aber, one of the female candidates promised to use a soft approach in solving the university’s problems as she seeks to be one of the few female guild presidents the university has had.

Aber, a Forum for Democratic Change Candidate (FDC) during a last rally in Livingstone Hall said that she will engage the university administration in a diplomatic manner to solve the university’s problems. “The aggressive approach usually ends up in strikes,” she said.

Aber cited the 60% semester fees payment which has caused students to strike a number of times with no solution in sight.

“I want to engage the administration in a dialogue so that more time is given to the students to pay the fees,” she also said at a rally at the Freedom Square.

Aber is a second year student undertaking a Bachelor of Arts degree. The university has so far had four female guild presidents.

Also Ivan Bowe an independent looks to be favorite among the students because of his fight against the 60% tuition increment. He made his name after he was he was imprisoned where he appealed and won.

Another female guild candidate in the race is Sarah Aseru who represents the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD). Other candidates in the race are Phillip Asimwe (NRM), Bowe Ivan (Independent). Other independent candidates are Sam Komakech, Nicholas Nanyeenya, Eddy Kintu, Julius Tabaro.

Aseru said she is not NRM, though her father state minister for local government Alex Onzima belongs to NRM.

Responding to a question from fellow candidates, at the Guild Presidential Candidates’ Debate at Makerere University Main Hall, Aseru said that though she has a relationship with NRM, she chose a different path.

Asimwe is the NRM candidate taking over from Boniface Junior Mbabazi who was disqualified from the race. Mbabazi was thrown out of the race was and asked to help the investigations into a case where he is suspected to have forged his academic papers from Nasser Road.
