Four senior police officers in the city arrested early this month on the orders of Kampala Police boss Andrew Kaweesi over alleged negligence of duty have been released on bond and ordered to hand over office.

The officers, who include the divisional police commander (DPC) of Kira Peter Nkulega, Edgar Akankwasa, the officer in charge (OC) station, Moses Baluku, the OC Kireka and Paul Mukunya, the OC Namboole police were released last week, pending appearing before the police disciplinary court.

However, they were directed not to handle any more police business, until cleared by the court, Ibin Senkumbi the Kampala police spokesperson has said.

“The disciplinary court has not yet been constituted but they were released on bond and directed hand over office and not to handle any police duties until when cleared,” Senkumbi said. It is not clear when the court will be constituted.

The officers were arrested during an impromptu visit by Kaweesi in the night early this month only to find some stations undermanned or closed. Riled by the situation Kaweesi later put all police officers in the region on notice, saying they face tough action for negligence of duty.

No officer irrespective of rank, he said, will be spared if found to be negligent.
