The reconstruction of Kasubi tombs is in its final stages. It will be completed next month, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has revealed.

Mayiga said much of the construction work is complete and what remains is the roofing of the “Muzibu Azala Mpanga” the mausoleum where remains of four Buganda kings were buried.

“The perimeter wall has been completed. We are waiting for the installation of lights and other security gadgets around it. The work on the main site is also in its final stages,” he said.

It is now four years since fire reduced Kasubi tombs to ashes. The tombs seat on a 64-acre piece of land near Kampala.
Mayiga said the rooftop work is going on slowly because it requires the use local materials like rids.

“The roofing process is slow because it has to be done in accordance to the cultural norms. They are using reeds which are designed in a special way before putting on the grass. But the entire work will be done by next month,” he added.

Mayiga revealed this during his fundraising campaign for the reconstruction of Kasubi Tombs at Bulange, Mengo.

The Katikkiro said many Government programs fail because they are not keen on the targeted time frame, in which they have to be accomplished.

“Let us respect the time frame in which to accomplish our goals, to avoid wasting time.  If time is not respected, it leads to laziness, corruption and shoddy work,” he said.
