Attention on Thursday turned on the East African Community as three of the five states launched the single tourist visa at the ITB Berlin tourism festival before a packed audience.

The ceremony done at the colourful and gigantic Uganda stall in the centre of Berlin is meant to woo the high end global tourists thus spurring increased revenues for the countries.

"It is more cost effective in terms of money, time and experience," said Uganda's state minister for tourism, Agnes Akiror during the launch witnessed by tourism executives from the three states of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda.

Tanzania and Burundi, the other two states in the community are yet to join the tripartite initiatives that also include joint infrastructure projects.

Stephen Asiimwe, the chief executive officer of Uganda Tourism Board described the occasion as a “great marriage that will open opportunities.” Asiimwe explained that EAC will now begin the process of instituting one standard for its tourism products.

“Joint marketing initiatives will be undertaken, this will enable people maximize their stay,” said Asiimwe.
