AFTER a gruelling three days of golf in the scorching sun, Adolf Muhumuza who led the qualifiers and his colleagues are set to join a one-month training camp that will ensure they further improve all aspects of their game.
Announcing the 22-man squad after the qualifiers on Thursday at Kitante, UGC president Kiryowa Kiwanuka said despite qualifying, their job isn’t done yet.
He said the technical team chaired by committee members J. B. Tumusiime and Herbert Rwamibazi will be in charge of naming the final teams that will represent the country in the various events following the training camps. Deo Akope is coach.
The team will immediately embark on preparations for the Zone Six Championship due on April 15 in South Africa and the All Africa Junior Championship thereafter in Zambia in early May.
“The top 20 must continue fighting for places on the team amongst themselves and while in camp they must maintain a particular degree of discipline in order to qualify for selection,” Kiwanuka stated.
“You must fly the national flag high. We only expect success from you; the union is going to play its part and the rest is upon you to play the game, that’s the challenge you have and we expect you to support each other and maintain discipline while on national duty,”
He said the union also plans to send the team to different regional events; funds allowing and with the help of the different captains will continue to assess even those who didn’t make the cut in the qualifiers in order to consider them in future.
Captain of the team Phillip Kasozi and Henry Lujja who were away for the Kenya Pro/Am tournament will join the twenty in camp on return.
Each of the players received a national ID yesterday that will enable them play at any course in the country without paying any charges.
