Nyanda arrives for Women's Day fete

Jamaican musician Nyanda arrived in the country in the wee hours of Tuesday morning for her Women’s Day concert to be held at Garden City Rooftop.

Her music is Rnb reggae fusion and while one will remember her for those rapping lines in Brick n Lace’s “Love Is Wicked,” to tell you that she is the one who did the song “Slippery When Wet” will draw you to her quite well. A fine striking song as well.

Besides her performance, Nyanda, in her ‘30s, will spend a week in the country doing charity works with partners like Reach A Hand and It Takes Two non-profit organisations.

Her performance will be the second one in Uganda, the last time being in 2004 while still with her sister Nailah Thorbourne in the Brick n Lace duo. The group split in 2012 after their last performance in Congo.

Nailah is now into interior designing in Jamaica while Nyanda stuck on to singing. In that time, she has recorded songs like the sexy dancehall remix of Taylor Swift’s “Trouble” that spent six weeks on UK’s Urban Club Chart and also “Boom and Rave.” She is also a songwriter and has before penned songs for American artist J-Lo.

“When we took leave from Brick n Lace, it was scary for me at first when I started performing solo. I was used to being in the group but because I had fallen in love with performing, I kept singing,” she addressed journalists at a press briefing held at Airtel House this morning.

Dressed in a matching dark dotted and yellow top and short skirt, the singer said she also has interests in enriching life as a community and has some fondness for Aftrica.

“I am glad to be in Uganda for the second time and I find it important to share with women in Uganda about life and its obstacles. We all have challenges but we have to share solutions to those challenges.”

The show will also be graced by local female musicians like Cindy, Lillian Mbabazi, Keko, Irene Ntale, Jackie Chandiru, Brenda Nambi and Sheeba Karungi.

During the concert, Airtel, main sponsors of the show will recognise the Ugandan woman of substance 2014 winner.

The woman of substance awards will seek for that woman achiever who has made a significant contribution to the society through sports, music, public service, arts and culture and media.
