NAMILYANGO - The derby between the two oldest rugby schools in the country – SMACK the ‘Weevils’ and Namilyango the ‘Fumblers’ – lived to its billing with SMACK humiliating their hosts with a 15-0 whipping in the U-19 category.
Team captain Ronald Ogwok gave the visitors a 5-0 half time lead courtesy of a try before fly-half Enock Tumusiime and centre Joseph Nsubuga aka Krugah added a try each to silence Namilyango in front of a full home crowd.
SMACK had last defeated Namilyango in 2009 and Sunday’s victory came as sweet revenge for last year’s semi-final defeat to their nemesis.
The decades-old rivalry between the two schools was catalyzed in the opening fixture of the U-14 when SMACK defeated Namilyango 3-0, and Namilyango paid back in the U-16 category with a 13-8 victory.
“We came prepared for them because we knew that it would require that extra effort – beyond skills – to win this game and actually it worked,” said SMACK games teacher Ronald Mutebi.
His opposite, Valence Bizimaana, attributed his side’s defeat to lack of fitness.
He said: “We fielded some S.4 vacists and their fitness levels were still wanting but we are going to work out on our mistakes and wait for a return leg on the weekend.

Despite being a Sunday, most of the Namilyango staff were available to make sure that there occurred no incidents during and after the tight encounter.
They also lined up by the roadside to ensure that the SMACK bus left the school campus without being attacked by the frustrated hosts.
