The inaugural national university basketball league started on Saturday with Makerere University and Ndejje University sharing wins in the women and men’s fixtures respectively.

In the men’s fixture Ndejje defeated hosts Makerere 59-57 in a tight mouthwatering game that had Daniel Othieno Ndejje voted Man of Match.

Othieno scored a game-high 18 points, two higher than Tonny Dulaba of Ndejje University.

Ndejje coach Walker Obedi attributed the narrow win to lack of composure from the boys, considering that it was the first game of the league.

“We were just testing the combination of players and I left out a number of the good players, but this league is good for us because we can be able to nurture boys that can’t make in the FUBA premier league,” said the Ndejje coach.

Meanwhile in the women category, Makerere Sparks whipped Ndejje 53-25 with Ndejje team captain Lilian Zawedde attributing the defeat to lack of enough preparation.

“We were told yesterday that we have a game today, but now that we know the program we shall intensify training and our next game is going to be a must win,” said Zawedde.

The first ever university league in the country will be officially launched next Saturday at Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono.
