Uganda Christian University graduates have been warned against materialism and greed at places of work.
UCU Vice Chancellor, Dr. John Senyonyi while gracing the fourth part of the 14th graduation ceremony on Friday at the university’s main campus said riches and pleasures of life are what had caused the high rate of corruption in Uganda.

“Many people think graduating with bachelor’s and master’s degrees was enough to make them rich. You find a graduate who has just got a job; he accesses a loan particularly to buy a car. That is the kind of person whose priorities are turned upside down,” said Senyonyi.

He said as a young man, he graduated in 1978, but he worked for years to get his personal car in 1993 saying that due to patience and a sense of balance, people today quickly get things and riches that they do not deserve.

A total of 459 students graduated with diplomas and degrees in various disciplines. Of these 74 students graduated with master’s degrees, Two hundred forty five of those graduating were male and 214 were females.

Dr. Senyonyi also asked the graduates not to wait for death to take them back to the church.
“That may sound cruel, but I mean you need to be actively involved in your church. This is company that helps you to grow virtue in you and we all need good company,” he said.

One of the graduates, Christopher Ssebaggala who graduated a master’s degree in Education Administration and Planning asked teachers more especially in primary schools to think of going back to school so that they can have themselves reformed.

“I first obtained a certificate in education, later I went for a diploma and a degree. Thank God I have today completed the master’s. I wish every teacher could do this for the wellbeing of the profession,” said Ssebaggala, who is also the head teacher of Misindye Church of Uganda Primary School in Goma division in Mukono Municipality.
