Buganda kingdom, in partnership with Centenary Bank, has launched a new mobile phone-based fundraising drive to boost the Kasubi tombs fundraising campaign.

The initiative, called “Buganda Twezimbe ne Centemobile”, will also be used by all well-wishers to easily contribute towards reconstruction of the tombs and also towards other development initiatives in the kingdom.

The bank also contributed sh5m towards the rebuilding of the tombs and handed over a tent to the Katikiro Peter Charles Mayiga.

Launching the initiative at his home in Lweza, Wakiso district, Mayiga thanked the bank for its initiative and contribution.

He said it was a good gesture to cooperate with the kingdom.

“This gesture truly shows that you are our bank. I urge our people especially the youth to support Centenary Bank as our partner in development,” he said.

The premier said the kingdom is building strategic partnerships with different corporate entities as a means of raising the kingdom’s revenue and promoting quality services to the people.

“We are in talks with several entities including your institution (Centenary Bank). I believe every business can easily succeed if market is available and Buganda has the numbers and quality people who can use your bank,” he said.

Mayiga said Buganda is to sign agreements with companies which are smart enough.

“We want an official bank for the kingdom which can be trusted by our people. We want special beverage and alcohol companies which can supply at our official functions,” he said.

With the staging 30 official functions every year, only approved companies will be mandated to sell products at the venues.

“There is need to initiate programs to empower the ordinary people and address their socio-economic needs. That’s why we call for a mutual partnership,” he noted.

The partnerships, he said, must be based on firm principles of integrity and good governance. “We promise to put the money to good use.”

Mayiga urged people to embrace the innovation and donate generously towards the development of the kingdom.

Centenary Bank managing director, Fabian Kasi said as the official kingdom’s finance partner, they will be charged with collecting Centemobile money contributions toward the kingdom’s projects.

“We promise to execute this work with diligence. All funds will be collected through the bank’s Centemobile banking platform and will be directly saved on the Buganda Twezimbe Account at Centenary Bank,” he said.

Centemobile service allows customers to transfer funds from their accounts to other Centenary Bank accounts.

Kasi said already they have 20,000 Centemobile subscribers and are going to send them SMS on the development to start contribution.

He said the bank is ready to support all Buganda activities.
