The Democratic Party (DP) is set to launch a series of activities to commemorate its 60 years of existence.

The launch according to Mathias Nsubuga, the party’s Secretary General, will take place on March 1, 2014 at the Ggaba Beach Hotel.

Nsubuga told a news conference in Kampala that the celebrations will also mark the beginning of preparations ahead of the 2016 general elections.  He was flanked by Florence Namayanja MP Bukoto South, Latif Ssebagala MP Kawempe North and other DP members.

“We intend to celebrate this day to revive and rejuvenate the party’s glory and to awaken and unite party members ahead of the 2016 elections,” Nsubuga said.

He said the activities slated for the celebrations include a mass registration of members and supporters of the party, Music dance and drama festivities, media talk shows, fundraisings and a regional celebration whose climax will take place on the 6th 0ctober 2014.

“We shall engage in producing documentaries to update the party’s history. We also want to update our book of history from 1954 to date,” Nsubuga added.

When asked about whether police had been notified about the party’s events, Nsubuga said they had informed them and that they expect the celebrations to be peaceful.

DP was officially formed on the October 6, 1954 by the Late Eng. Joseph Kasolo as the first president general and founder members, Paulo Nsubuga, Louis Tyaba, Anthony Serubiri, Sebastian Kibuuka, Kasule and Kiddu, all deceased. Its main aim was to promote truth and justice through protection of fundamental human rights, constitutionalism and rule of law.
