Girl programmers, gamers, coders & business analysts were tasked to invite more girls to join the ICT world during their first ever Girl geek dinner, which was held at Piato Restaurant recently.
“Women make better leaders, managers, and documenters, yet they are still few in the industry” Nodumo Dhlamini, Programme Manager-Information, Communication & Knowledge Management at RUFORUM network said this while addressing the girls at Dinne.
She added to say that women are more resilient when it comes to solving problems so they need to be mentored, trained and encouraged to achieve greater results.
Nodumo who was wearing a skirt and jacket over a black & white polka dot blouse argued women in the ICT to remain feminine, and not look so tough.
Betty Enyonam Kumahor, the Regional Managing Director of Thought Works, a global software & products company also encouraged the girl geeks to relate with each more before, moving out to interact with the males.
According to her ladies usually learn more when they work alone.
“I have worked in ICT for a while now, and through my experience I know that an IT lady will feel better confining in fellow IT lady rather than the men,” Enyonam said.
She said that women in IT will find it hard to belong in a world that’s dominated by a majority of men, but they must persist, listen and lean on each other for support. “Great things happen when women come together under one room. Every woman in IT should belong to an IT group (women in technology -WITU, Girl Geeks and AFCHIX) to make this possible,” Enyonam said.
Though the dinner was a girl affair, a few male gamers showed up, like the mighty gamer, Solomon King at least that is how his follower gamers refer to him.
He was overwhelmed though by the girl power in the hall. He first stayed away in hiding and was later fetched and dragged into the hall by his follower gamers to address the girl crowd.
His body gestures and his confession that he had never stood up to talk before such a big number of ladies showed how challenging this was for him.
Other male gamers who turned up were Samuel Odeke whose gamming name is the Ntinda sniper, Smith Magulu (Agent Smith)
