NATIONAL University Sports Federation of Uganda vice president Vincent Kisenyi has been appointed Village Mayor for the World University Cross-country.

Kisenyi, a lecturer at Uganda Christian University, was chosen by the sixth local organising committee meeting at the weekend.

The mayor takes charge of general administration and teams’ welfare. A total of 214 participants will be staying at Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe.

The mayor’s duties also include receiving teams, allocating rooms, ensuring that accommodation is up to the required standard, feeding and the flag raising ceremony.

“It’s a big challenge given the numbers. But we are set for the task,” said Kisenyi, who has already met the hotel’s management and is confident preliminary arrangements should be concluded by next week.

By Tuesday 31 countries had confirmed participation for the biennial meet that will be staged at Entebbe Golf Course.

This will be the second edition of the event to be staged in Africa. The first was in Algiers in 2006. All editions of the competition up to 2006 were hosted by Western European countries. North America also only got its first chance 2010 in Ontario, Canada.

First established in 1968 as a men’s only event, a women’s race was added in 1976 and FISU gave the event its official sanctioning two years later.

The programme of each championship consists of one men’s and one women’s race, with prizes being available for individuals and national teams.
