A one-day-old baby boy was allegedly stolen from the mother at St. Ambrose health center in Kagadi town council, Kibaale district on Monday.
The mother of the stolen baby identified as Margret Tumukunde a resident of Mugyenza parish in Mpeefu Sub County said that a seemingly friendly woman approached her and requested to help take the baby for immunization at the outpatient department but did not return.
“The woman took the baby for immunization and she had told me that she was nursing another patient in another department,” said Tumukunde.
She said that the woman first took the child for immunization and returned claiming that the queue was long.
Tumukunde narrated that the woman went with the child and returned claiming she was asked to produce a card which she did not have. When she was given the card, she never returned.
“I don’t know what to do next because I was operated on so I cannot move because am still admitted,” said Tumukunde.
The nurse in charge of the maternal ward at the health center, Bonny Kyomugisha, confirmed the incident.
Kyomugisha said security officers at the gate could refuse from going out after producing a card.
“The gate man suspected that the woman could have escaped from the health center and asked her to produce a card, so the woman went to the mother, picked the card for evidence and presented it at the gate allowing her to leave the hospital premises,” said Kyomugisha.
Meanwhile one of the people in the ward who knows little about the woman described her as Jackline a resident of Ruteete village in Ruteete sub county Kibaale district.
The officer in charge, Kagadi Police Station, Joseph Ayesiga, confirmed that the case was reported at the station.
“It is true the case has been lodged here and we have already received leading information as we start with investigations,” said Ayesiga.
Late last year another woman stole a baby from Kagadi hospital but was later arrested by police and is now serving a 5-year-jail term at Mambugu government prison over child theft.
