World University Cross-country Championship (March 22)

THERE will be more than just running at the forthcoming World University Cross-country.

Several cultural, sports and leisure packages have been organized to make the huge numbers expected in Entebbe have a memorable stay.

There will be musical shows, sailing and fishing on Lake Victoria besides visits to the botanical gardens and the wildlife education center.

There are also options of visiting other tourist attractions like national parks and the source of the river Nile.

“Our visitors have already shown a lot of interest. Some have already even booked,” explained National University Sports Federation of Uganda chairperson Penninah Kabenge.

Participants will start arriving in Uganda three days to competition day. By last week 23 countries had confirmed participation.

The world meet is a biennial competition for student athletes, organised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

The 2012 edition had athletes from 23 countries.

All editions of the competition up to 2006 were hosted by Western European countries.

Algeria became the first African nation to host the event in 2006.
