An American charity organisation, Ford Foundation, has donated 100, 000 US dollars (about sh250m) to the Nabagereka Development Foundation (NDF) in recognition for its work.

The charity’s president, Hilary Pennington, said they felt the Nabagereka Foundation was doing a “great job” to the population and for that reason deserved support.

Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda – the queen of Buganda kingdom – started the NDF in 2000 with the target of educating and empowering especially children, youths and women.

On the other hand, the Ford Foundation, which is based in New York, works to advance human welfare.

At a luncheon on Friday at Bulange Mengo, Pennington said Ford makes grants through its headquarters and ten international field offices including in eastern Africa.

These grants support projects that focus on reducing poverty and injustice, promoting democratic values and advancing human knowledge, creativity and achievement, she outlined.

The Ford president first met the first deputy Katikkiro of Buganda and minister for foreign affairs in the Kabaka’s Government, Emmanuel Ssendaula before meeting the Nabagereka and her board members.

The visiting delegation toured Bulange – the official seat of Buganda kingdom – and later were entertained by a cultural group, Planets led by Annet Nandujja.

NDF board chairman Dr Jeff Mukasa Ssebuyira said the donation would help to enhance the foundation’s strategic plans.

He also pledged to strengthen the bond that has been started between the two foundations.

The Nabagereka Foundation undertakes four programs, namely, health, education, economic empowerment and institutional development.
